If we are looking strictly at the basis of human anatomy, women’s breasts exist for the sole purpose of child nourishment, but in today’s society they have been highly sexualized and many feel discomfort when seeing a woman breastfeed in public. If so, should women cover up when doing it?
On the one hand, some women feel it is their God-given right to breastfeed uncovered; they feel that since the breasts are feeding a baby and they are not flashing people for no reason, there is nothing wrong with it. People have come into the mindset that if they are not being used for pleasure, they need to be put away, out of sight, out of mind. Breasts are not sex organs, the primary function of the breast is to feed children, and the fact that in our current society we sexualise it, is just terrible. There isn't anything inherently sexual about the female chest, we just make it seem sexual. While breasts are erogenous zones, they aren't sex organs, and we shouldn't have laws to cover them up at all.
On the other hand, many people still are uncomfortable with this and feel uneasy even when a woman is breastfeeding completely covered. Due to their highly sexualized nature, men may feel uncomfortable seeing a mother breastfeeding in public due to the fact that he is attracted to breasts. He may be tempted to look whether he consciously wants to or not. For the same reason, wives and mothers and even some fathers, feel that they have to “protect” their loved ones from being exposed to even the idea of partial nudity when they see a woman breastfeeding in public. There are also mothers that feel unsafe when feeding their child because of the many stares that they receive, so public places that provide the necessities for a woman to breastfeed safely and comfortably should be made.
In conclusion, there shouldn't be laws about women covering themselves when feeding their child, but instead, there should be built places where the mothers feel comfortable to do so without the judging stares of the public.
