Should Romanian teachers promote immigration to richer countries or building a life on native soil?
Romania’s demographic charts indicate that the young population is, more often than not, less than interested in staying in the country and maybe helping fix the problems it has, opting to imemigrate, often, as soon as they finish high school. Leaving the country is an option that is presented and quite a few times, promoted, to children as young as middle school by certain teachers.
On one hand, it’s part of the teacher’s job to present all the options to children and frankly, for them, leaving just seems to be the best one. Most of them just want what is best for the students and that, in their opinion, is moving to a richer country, one that provides better job opportunities. The presentation of this option is important for students to understand what they can do. For many of them, school is the only place where they can form an idea about what they want to do after finishing high school. Although it is such a discussed topic, some students might not know the slightest bit of information about imemigration, about costs of living, collagescolleges or even the salaries outside the borderin other countries.
On the other hand, more and more young people leave, and the population is just growing old, which is never a good thing. There is always need for a balance, which has been falling apart for a while now in our country. Influencing children to leave even more than they already are is just unfair for the country and the people still living within its borders. Furthermore, encouraging students to leave the country might have negative effects on both them and their families. Sending your child to finish their studies abroad, or simply moving, is not easy and it is not inexpensive at all either. This cost, both for the family and the child can be too much too handle and it can cause issues for and within the family. There are other disadvantages to blindly following advice to leave Romania: there are unpredictable social and cultural differences and sometimes adapting can be very hard, and they might be excluded, as a result of discrimination against Romanians or emigrants immigrantsin general. Also Furthermore, highly developed countries leave less room for creativity, which is the reason some highly educated people return to Romania, and a very unexpected and brushed upon drawback of leaving.
In conclusion, it is only fair for teachers to simply present immigration as an option but encouraging students towards it can cause a number of problems, for everybody involved. It can be a good option for many young people, but it is not the only option and should not be presented as such. Teachers encouraging students to leave is not necessarily bad, but should be done in a realistic manner, with caution not to brush over the negative aspects.
