Only half of the world's population can go online. Should the United Nations declare access to the internet a basic human right so that it becomes a priority, like the right to equality, education, freedom of opinion, marriage and work? The Internet is the one thing that keeps us connected at all times. Nowadays every person can access and surf the internet and it came to a point where half of the population is using it on a daily basis. This has become such a common action that we tend to think that accessing the internet is something we should all be able to do. But is the Internet accession really something we should consider necessary when we talk about the human rights? Is the Internet access a thing me could consider a priority?
On one hand, the internet is a way of keeping us connected no matter where we are in the world. This makes it easier for us to communicate with other people from all around the globe, be it friend or family members. And, as we all know, communication is a skill that we, people are dependent on, so internet access helps us satisfy some of our basic needs. Moreover, the internet is a very good way of finding new information and learning new things. This is very useful especially since our first way of discovering the world (places, cultures and traditions) is on the internet. That being said, in today’s world, it is much easier to find on-line information than in books and this is another reason why the Internet should become a priority.
On the other hand, Internet access does not classify as a basic human need or as a human right. It is not a priority either. Although the internet is a very simple way of learning, only half of the world has access to it. This is why making the access to it a human right would mean that the difference in its usage between persons people living on different continents would be immense. Therefore, Internet access would be a way to part people in under developed countries from the ones living in an advanced society. Moreover, we do use the internet for various reasons but it is not a priority. We can life lifestyle without it, but we cannot live without food or water. Also, the United Nations should not declare the Internet as a human right since it is not as important as education or freedom of speech.
In conclusion, considering both sides, we should think twice before allowing the internet to take over our lives, much more than it has already done.
