Most people nowadays seem to be significantly more invested in their own material prosperity than their spiritual fulfillment. Is this unbalanced prioritization, however, a good change in people’s mentalities?
On the one hand, being materially prosperous can bring feelings of fulfillment and joy. This abundance is usually the result of hard work and great ideas and it is beneficial to prioritize them in regards to one’s career and education. Moreover, although material resources are generally seen as a spring of instant gratification, it is undeniable that people can also benefit from them on the long-term. In most cases, it guarantees a comfortable future and the ability to sustain one’s own family, which can undoubtedly brings happiness and meaning to anyone’s life.
On the other hand, shirking from spiritual fulfillment could lead, no matter how materially abundant one might be, to utter misery and unhappiness. Neglecting one’s spiritual needs, for example, showing gratitude or helping those in need, can turn into greed, being constantly unhappy or ungrateful of their current material possessions. Additionally, it can also turn into narcissism or egoism, in other words, only caring about their own well-being, with no compassion towards those less fortunate. Furthermore, people might be so caught up in reaching earthly prosperity, that they forget to enjoy the priceless things such as their loved ones, the moments they share together or just the lovely views outside of their window.
In conclusion, although striving to achieve material abundance is worthwhile, it is in my belief that there should always be a balance between the spiritual and the material aspects of life in order to achieve the most happiness and fulfillment.
